TIMAEUS Receives Best Paper Runner-up Award at EWSN 2026

We are pleased to announce that our paper “TIMAEUS: Time Synchronization and Multi-hop Communication in Batteryless Sensor Networks with Wake-up Receivers” has received the Best Paper Runner-up Award at the 23rd International Conference on Embedded Wireless Systems and Networks (EWSN 2026).

The paper, authored by Sayedsepehr Mosavat, Pedro José Marrón, and Matteo Zella, addresses one of the key challenges in realizing a sustainable and scalable Internet of Things: enabling reliable communication for batteryless devices powered through energy harvesting.

Batteryless sensor nodes offer a promising path toward maintenance-free IoT deployments, but their highly constrained and intermittent energy availability makes wireless communication particularly challenging. To address this, the authors propose TIMAEUS, a protocol suite combining time synchronization and routing mechanisms that leverage wake-up receivers to enable scalable, energy-efficient, and reliable networking in batteryless sensor networks.

The proposed approach was implemented on hardware prototypes and evaluated through extensive experiments as well as real-world field deployments. The results demonstrate the feasibility of creating large-scale, low-maintenance networks of batteryless devices capable of supporting future IoT applications.

This recognition highlights the growing impact of research at the intersection of energy harvesting, ultra-low-power communication, and sustainable IoT systems. We congratulate Sayedsepehr Mosavat, Pedro José Marrón, and Matteo Zella.
